What value does the Multi-Activation Bypass Valve deliver?
Introduction: In our previous two issues, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the pain points and the ingenious mechanics behind the Tianhe Multi-Activation Bypass Valve. As the concluding piece of this series, we will focus on its practical applications to see how it safeguards drilling rigs and secures a competitive edge in oil and gas development.
I. Core Application Scenarios: Thru-Drillstring LCM Squeezing and Wellbore Cleanout
The Tianhe Multi-Activation Bypass Valve serves two core functions downhole: high-efficiency lost circulation management and high-performance wellbore cleanout.
Thru-Drillstring LCM Squeezing (Lost Circulation Control): When formation loss occurs, lost circulation material (LCM) can be squeezed without tripping, eliminating traditional tripping operations. High-flow-rate operations are no longer restricted by MWD/LWD tools, downhole instruments, or bit nozzles. The valve can be positioned at various intervals above the directional BHA, effectively protecting downhole instruments and mud motors.
Wellbore Cleanout and Cuttings Bed Sweeping: In long horizontal sections of directional and extended-reach wells (ERW), conventional circulation often suffers from insufficient annular return velocity due to flow restrictions in tool nozzles, causing cuttings to accumulate on the low side of the wellbore and form a cuttings bed. Opening the bypass valve enables high-flow-rate jetting to agitate, suspend, and carry away accumulated sand and cuttings.
Conditioning and Pre-Casing Cleanout: Opening the valve prior to running casing, liners, or logging tools ensures thorough removal of bottomhole fill and thick mud cakes. This prevents obstruction or stuck pipe while running casing and significantly improves primary cementing quality.
Stuck Pipe Prevention: Before resuming pumping after prolonged shutdowns (such as during DST or logging operations), the bypass valve can be utilized for high-flow-rate circulation and cleanout to prevent settled cuttings from causing mechanical stuck pipe. It also resolves cuttings-carrying challenges in slimhole ultra-deep wells and effectively circulates out metal swarf during milling operations.

III. Three Core Value Propositions for Drilling Rigs
- Minimizing Non-Productive Time (NPT): By enabling thru-drillstring, multi-activation lost circulation control and wellbore cleanout without tripping, the valve drastically shortens the drilling cycle compared to traditional tripping for LCM squeezing (which typically takes 1 to 3 days per operation), effectively saving massive NPT costs for the rig.
- Comprehensive Asset Protection: By diverting high-flow-rate operations through the bypass, the valve prevents cement slurry or LCM particles from passing through directional tools, eliminating the high-dollar risks of mud motor stalling, stator de-bonding, or pulsar clogging.
- Enhancing Well Control Safety: Upon shutting down the pumps, the internal sliding sleeve automatically resets via spring force to close the bypass valve. This mitigates potential U-tube effects or well control risks, preventing well blowouts or borehole collapse caused by an open, un-isolated drillstring.
